Message from Chris Memmott: Data Centers and Juab County
Hello Juab County Friends,
By now, many of you likely know who I am, but for those who do not, my name is Chris Memmott, and I am running for Juab County Commissioner.
Earlier in this campaign, I shared my views on several issues facing our county. One of those issues was the proposed data center and the growing public discussion around it. I also noted that I have professional experience in telecommunications and data computing, which gives me a practical understanding of how these systems work and why these conversations matter.
I want to address this issue clearly because some of my earlier comments have been mischaracterized or taken out of context on social media.
When it comes to data centers, the conversation is being framed too simply, as if you must be either fully for them or fully against them. I do not believe it is that simple. This is a complicated issue that deserves serious thought, honest discussion, and practical solutions.
Let me be clear: I am NOT in favor of large data center facilities as they are currently being proposed. I DO NOT support developments that consume significant amounts of land, water, and other limited resources. I am also NOT in favor of large-scale projects that take away valuable farm ground or place added strain on the resources our valley depends on.
At the same time, we cannot ignore the reality that data computing is now part of everyday life. Nearly every aspect of modern life depends on technology, from communication and business to transportation, education, and commerce. Whether people realize it or not, much of the technology we use every day relies on data centers in some form.
That is why this issue cannot be reduced to campaign slogans or simple talking points. The real question is not whether data computing will be part of our future. It already is. The real question is how our communities will be served in a way that protects our land, water, agricultural heritage, and quality of life.
That will require leaders who understand both the technology and the local impact. It will require tough conversations with the companies behind these proposals. And it will require a commitment to finding solutions that work for Juab County, not just for outside interests.
I will continue to approach this issue with the seriousness it deserves. My position is straightforward: I do not support the kind of large-scale data center development currently being discussed, but I do support responsible, informed planning for the technology infrastructure our communities rely on.
This is not a black-and-white issue, and it will not be solved by exaggeration or misunderstanding. It will be solved through informed leadership, honest debate, and a clear focus on what is best for Juab County.
Thank You
Chris L Memmott
Candidate for Juab County Commissioner
